Michelle Pugh

Currently she is entering her second season at OUAZ and is excited and eager to start competing. Last year Michelle was named Freshman Of The Year, and is looking forward to continuing growing as a player and continuing bringing in more wins for her team! She has always been around the world of tennis with her mom being a coach, but she started taking it more seriously at the age of 12. Some of her greatest tennis achievements include, 5A Girls Doubles Regional Champion & State Qualifier (2023), Two time 5A Girls Doubles District Champs, SuperChamp, Freshman Of The Year OUAZ (2025), and Rookie Of The Year (2025). Additionally, Michelle graduated high school in the top 5% of her class, with her academic achievements. Michelle also was co-team captain of her high school team, and in her spare team is a tennis coach at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. Currently Michelle is majoring in Business & Accounting, with hopes of pursuing a career in either an analytic or marketing job. She also plans on earning her Masters degree, and making sure to spend some time traveling post grad. Michelle has been able to be so successful on and off the court due to her consistency, and dedication. She grew up playing tennis with her mom who taught her throughout her tennis career. She experienced a few injury setbacks in her time playing but always continued to persevere and strive to be the best. Her game mentality is, “to get every ball back and give them a shot that they aren’t used to or to place it strategically. While I am playing I try to stay positive and keep my head up always which has helped me perform better on court and stay focused. I feel what makes me stand out from others is that I am good at picking the ball up out of odd angles and still getting it back over the net. I am also a left handed player, which gives me some advantage as well.” she tells us. Some of the biggest supporters in Michelle’s life include her friends and her family. Her friends and teammates are constantly motivating her and cheering her on, which inspires her, and her family provides constructive criticism, pushes her to do her best, and always are giving her the best advice to help her grow. When asked what tennis has taught her Michelle said, “tennis has taught me many things and is a crucial part of my life. It has greatly impacted the person I am today. It has taught me how to problem solve, handle pressure, and be mentally tough. Not only that, but it has also given me many great friends, and many opportunities that open doors to a better future for myself. All of the characteristics and experience I have gained from playing this sport also helps me in the real world. It teaches me how to deal with people, how to figure things out, and to trust in myself. I am truly grateful for this sport, and I do not know who’d I be without it.” We are wishing the best for Michelle in her upcoming season at OUAZ! Fangs Out!

Outside of basketball Jaya enjoys making content creation, graphic design, and exploring Arizona with her close friends. Jaya has been so successful in everything she does because of her hard work and mindset she has, playing every game like it is her last, always leaving her heart on the court. She has faced several injuries and setbacks that may have caused many others to give up, however she became a stronger player from it and was able to fully recover and get back out on the court for this season! Her strong mentality is what has proven what an incredible athlete and person she is on and off the court. Now, along this journey there have definitely been some key pillars who have helped support her along the way. “My mom is by far my biggest supporter, as a single mom she has sacrificed so many of her own opportunities so that I could play club, go on visits, and come to my games.” She tells us. We are wishing Jaya all the luck in her upcoming season at OUAZ, and she continues her amazing career, and continues growing as a player and person inspiring others, and constantly working each and everyday to achieve her goals.
